Pretend Play - Page 3
Activity Ideas for Pretend Play
o A cardboard box can become a boat, a fort, a car, a pirate ship, a cave, a castle, or anything your child may decide it is! Let their imagination go free! You may need to help with cutting a window, or door flap into the box if they would like that addition; you may help your child make a flag or sign for their special creation; your child may want to color or decorate their box to become more “real” to them.
o A tackle box, tool box, or storage box can become the springboard for a pretend play fishing trip, a pretend play explorer or astronaut - you never know what creative thoughts are in our child’s imagination!
o Build a den or cave with blankets, a small pop tent, big cushions – imagination goes a long way!

o Play charades where your child will dress up and pretend play, trying to get you to guess just what they are and what they are doing
o Help your child to start with a theme to play around such as running a restaurant or food server, going to a fancy party, being an animal in the wild or at the zoo, taking care of a baby, playing police / fire / rescue person, being a teacher, a bus or taxi driver, running a toy shop, or pretending to be a mommy or daddy. If they can imagine it, they can pretend play it!
o Just let your child go through the variety of items and come up with spontaneous ideas for pretend play. You can make special times during the week for pretend play and provide specific items (not the whole lot of them) as to not overwhelm and to guide them based on the types of materials provided for playtime.
