Sensory Messy Play - Water Play Page 3

Sensory Messy Play - Water Play Activities Continue:

o   See how many kiddie or play balls it takes to cover the surface of the water

o   Practice pouring the water from one container to another, and then another, and so on

o   Fill floaty fish or small floaty critters to the water and have them “catch” them with an aquarium net, a slotted spoon, or a small plastic sieve

o   Use turkey basters or similar items to “suck up” the water, then squeeze it out into a container or onto their head

o   Use funnels to pour water through

o   Add colored foam cubes, blocks, or letters, and have your child sort by shape or color into containers or small buckets; have them search and find for specific colors or shapes on your direction

o   If outside and using a “shower curtain pool” or water filled plastic sand box, give them a bucket or two of play sand and let them have their “day at the beach,” playing in the water with the sand, digging for items in the water covered sand, and so on

o   Poke holes in the bottom of a plastic bucket or container and turn it into a shower head

o   Use pool noodles (long or cut up) to play with, lay on, or just hang on to in the water

Place a hose (or sprinkler) at the top of a slide and let them slide down through the running water

Water balloon play that includes toss and catch without letting the balloon break, run a race where they have to carry and place the water filled balloons from one container to another, fill up their outdoor splash pool with water balloons to sit on and squish, or let them squeeze them until they burst water all over themselves (supervise and pick up and dispose of any broken balloon pieces to protect kids, pets, and wildlife)

BE SAFE around water at all times – keep a close eye on any child who is playing in or around water. A child can drown in a small amount of water – keep them safe!

Empty all the toys, basins, buckets, pool, after water play time is over; your child can help in the cleanup – letting them know that by helping clean up “we’ll have everything ready to use again next time.”

Watch for slippery floors and sweep up, towel up, clean up any standing water for safety.

And of course, be sure to HAVE FUN!
